How to play Reversi

Place discs to flip your opponent's. Simple rules, famously deep play.

Setup

An 8×8 board with four discs in the centre: two black, two white, diagonally. Black moves first.

On your turn

• Place a disc so it traps one or more enemy discs in a straight line between it and another of your discs.
• Every trapped disc flips to your colour.
• A move must flip something; if you cannot, you pass.

Winning, draws and losing

• When the board is full or neither player can move, the most discs wins. Every draw refunds both stakes with no fee.

Online rules and fair play

• Legal moves and a live disc count are always shown.
• Every game runs on a server clock: running out of time loses.
• A disconnected player has 60 seconds to return before forfeiting.
